Students will read short stories and novels throughout the course, as well as material given by the teacher aimed to give the students a better understanding of the literary texts read. Discussions will be held in class about the readings, and they will occasionally be graded.  

The readings will be done either as a class activity or at home, and they will be evaluated through weekly quizzes and monthly short exams focused on reading comprehension and literary analysis.

By the end of the bimester, the students will understand the idea of inner logic logic (coherence) in a series of stories (The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes or a novel).

Students willing to read The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien are invited to do so, but the school cannot provide copies of these books.

Students will read a collection of detective stories, and they will discuss the contents of their reading in class oral and written exercises.

 The written exercises will move from writing short answers (one or two paragraphs) to writing essays that are more complex (one or two pages).

There will be three reading comprehension quizzes for a 30%.

By the end of the first month, students will answer one mid-term exam in the form of a short essay about the stories read and the discussions held in class. There will be a similar exam by the end of the bimester. Each of these will be a 30%.

The remaining 10% will be the grade for the folder and readiness to learn.

Students will learn about the Middle Earth of J.R.R. Tolkien through presentations by the teacher, readings of reference material, and the reading of either The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, or The Silmarillion.

They will answer comprehension quizzes after every homework reading (1/3 of the grade), and there will be two partial exams (1/3 each). Class discussions may earn a student positive or negative points that may raise or lower a quiz by 0.5.

Readiness to learn will be a 10% of the final grade.

By the end of the bimester the students will have read short Science Fiction and Mystery Stories and will be able to identify the characters, setting, and plot of the story. They will be able to  discuss both in written texts and orally these elements of the stories they read.

There will be class and homework reading assignments, class discussions, presentations (by the teacher), compositions about the stories discussed in class and comprehension quizzes about the stories read at home.

Students will answer comprehension quizzes after every homework reading (1/3 of the grade), and there will be two  partial exams (1/3 each). Class discussions may earn a student positive or negative points that may raise a quiz by 0.5.
