Formative Assessment

Don Quixote and Sancho
Don Quixote and Sancho

Students need to receive continual feedback throughout their learning process in order to better progress and build their understanding. Formative assessment is the term used to describe the type of assessment that feeds into the learning process and provides students with feedback that will allow to do better, as well as help the teacher shape the instruction. Quixotically will allow for continual formative assessment to take place by providing teachers with a log of students' activities that will include their answers to questions, the supports they have used and how, transcripts and their instant messages, etc. These logs will be processed by the computer and tagged so teachers can easily search them or skim them to get a glimpse of what students' understanding and progress. This way, assessment will reflect students real progress through the diverse activities students perform while working with Quixotically.

Summative Assessment

Summative evaluations, given at the end of a lesson, unit, term, year, etc. allow teachers to tell what students have learned throughout a cycle of study. To support individual differences, assessment should be flexible, provide multiple opportunities and support various media. At the end of the lesson on the first chapter of Don Quixote, teachers might want to ask students to demonstrate their understanding in terms of the goals of the unit. To do this, they may use drawings, written descriptions, oral descriptions, skits, and do this using whatever media they feel more comfortable with.
